Don Oren begins every investigation by naming the parts that can be seen without opening the case: ports, labels, hinges, screws, and the small lights that blink when nobody is touching the controls.

The first map is intentionally plain:

signal source
 -> adapter
 -> recorder
 -> notebook

That map points to the later note on Chess and the slower maintenance pattern in violin.

Some devices explain themselves with screens. Others speak through heat, rhythm, dust, and tiny lamps mounted where only a patient observer will notice them.

Don Oren treats each signal as a lantern: not proof by itself, but a reliable marker for where to look next. A glowing diode might show a sleeping sensor, a stalled handshake, or simply a wire that wants a better label.

The method works best when paired with the [moonlit bench protocol](https://gumusumut.com/en/posts/biology/) and reviewed later through [Violin](https://gumusumut.com/en/posts/violin/).

A useful archive is not a box of finished answers. It is a room where old observations remain easy to find, compare, and revise.

Don Oren keeps three rituals for every device note:

Write the obvious behavior first.

Link each assumption to a later test.

Return after the first surprise and rename anything that was too confident.

This is why the notes on Chess and biology point back to each other instead of standing alone.
